Clearview waives fee for Habitat build

Following up on a request from Habitat for Humanity to waive the Clearview portion of development fees and building permit costs for its upcoming build in Stayner, council has agreed to decline a staff recommendation that the fees be decreased by about half and go for the full pop.

Following last month’s request for support for the South Georgian Bay chapter of Habitat for Humanity, treasury staff put forth a recommendation for a 55 per cent decrease in fees but it was Councillor Shawn Davidson who moved that it should be upped to 100 per cent.

The organization is planning to build a semi-detached house, making two units available for two families, on 212 Quebec Street, which would equal $45,951.72 in development charges.

Some councillors justified the decision, saying it helps the municipality provide affordable housing, a priority set by the county.

“This is our small way of assisting in that process,” said Davidson.

“We have very few avenues for affordable housing in our rural community. Having good housing is so important,” said Councillor Deborah Bronée.

Councillor Kevin Elwood reiterated his opinion that all other organizations have to apply for funds through the community assistance grant program. He said he’s not against supporting the organization but it should be done in an equitable manner.

“No one else receives that kind of support. It’s too much,” said Elwood.

Councillor Thom Paterson said he hopes the move will inspire developers to do the same.

“I would like to see this kind of largess duplicated by our developers. I hope they see what we are doing and stand up,” said Paterson.

Habitat for Humanity helps people secure affordable housing by setting successful applicants up in a modest home with a long-term interest-free mortgage.
