Dance school holds classes in Creemore

Fleet-Wood Dancentre is offering dance classes in Creemore beginning in September.

Area youth may have had an introduction to the dance school last year when Nottawasaga Creemore Public School students had a day of free instruction when Fleet-Wood Dancentre visited the school.

“We like to do that because often, especially little boys, who may want to dance but their parents will never in a million years bring them to class, we bring dance to them,” said the dance school’s co-founder Sharron Williams Fleet. “It’s part of the school curriculum so we volunteer and it’s something we like to do.”

Fleet-Wood Dancentre was opened in Collingwood in 1994 by Williams Fleet and Jane Wooding and attracts students from the region, including Clearview.

Williams Fleet said her son Jonathan Fleet and his partner Sierra Maraj will be teaching in Creemore. They have returned to the area after graduating from dance school and are taking over some of the dance classes in Collingwood and has allowed the school to branch out into Creemore.

Both are graduates of the George Brown College Dance Program and have Intermediate Cecchetti Ballet Certificates. Fleet also graduated recently from an early childhood education program. Maraj, who danced at Fleet-Wood Dancentre from the time she was a young girl, studied dance performance at George Brown.

“They are two great instructors and really popular at Fleet-Wood. I am so glad they are back. These are transition years, there’s going to come a day when they’ll take over Fleet-Wood Dancentre when I get tired of teaching but I am not tired yet,” said Williams Fleet.

In Creemore, classes in beginner dance, ballet, jazz, hip hop and contemporary are being offered for children as young as three and all the way to 18.

The recreation classes cost $30 per month for the first child with discounts offered for multiple classes and siblings. Classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the way the schedule is set up, students seven and older can take up to four classes per week.

Creemore students will be invited to participate at the year-end recital at Meaford Hall, a professional level show with custom costumes made by Williams Fleet, which dancers get to keep.

Creemore classes begin on Sept. 13. Registration will be held on Sept. 8 at Station on the Green from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and continues throughout the year. Students are welcome to try a class before committing if they are not sure what discipline they want to sign up for. All of the classes are open to beginners and Williams Fleet said there may be opportunity to expand as the dancers gain experience.

Dance gear will be available at the registration session so people can get outfitted for the season.
