Dance studios raise thousands for Orillia theatre

Two local dance studios collaborated to host the Georgian Dance Festival Gala on Jan. 28, raising $2,355 for the Orillia Opera House. The show, held at the historic Orillia theatre, featured the top 30 competitive dance routines from Georgian Bay School of Dance of Midland and The DanceRoom of Stayner. Nearly 150 dancers were involved from ages 5-30, performing in Jazz, Tap, Acrobatics, Ballet, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Lyrical and Musical Theatre.

The event was preceded by a friendly dance competition the day prior at The Orillia Opera House involving both studios. Adjudicating was Matthew Montgomery, a notable dance instructor and performer who has been featured in music videos, live performances, and tours across North America. Montgomery selected 30 of the best routines performed at the competition to be featured the following day at the Gala fundraiser.

The DanceRoom has hosted its yearly recital at the Orillia Opera House for four years now. The theatre’s amenities and large seating capacity allow the studio to host their 1200+ audience members annually. “The Georgian Dance Festival Gala was a great way to give back to an incredible historical building and theatre that has served us so well” says owner of The DanceRoom Jennifer Campbell.

The Galas success has inspired the return of the Georgian Dance Festival Gala for years to come as a way to give back to arts and culture facilities.
