Double toonie lunch funds support local charities

 In Community

What’s on the menu during the fall and winter at St. Luke’s? Soup, of course, or “suppa”, a medieval dish of thick stew on bread slices, although ours comes in a bowl with a side of bread.

From the comforting simplicity of tomato and chicken, to the more adventurous flavours of other countries, soup has been offered to the community for many years by St. Luke’s. The original menu of homemade soup, selections of bread, celery and carrot sticks, plus juice, tea and coffee has been available, for the sum of a toonie, the last Friday of each fall and winter month. Sometimes there is even dessert.

Homemade soup is donated by the St. Luke’s Anglican Church Women with additional donations by volunteer friends, who often help set-up, serve and clean up; a much appreciated gesture. There are usually eight to 10 superior soup flavours, with “cream-of – anything” being the most popular. In 6,000 B.C. it would have been “cream-of-hippopotamus”!

From the beginning of Toonie Lunches at St. Luke’s we decided, ahead of the day, just where the monies from each month’s effort would go. All the funds raised in this way have gone back into the community and to other charities where we see a need. In the past year, donations have been given to such endeavours as: Coldest Night of the Year walk, Health Mission trips to Dominican Republic, Cybergnomes Robotics teams, both boys and girls, RAY’s Place, Stayner Food Bank, Alzheimer’s Society, Leprosy Mission, Habitat for Humanity and to Community Outreach – a hand-up to those in need in Creemore. Our list has become quite extensive over the years. We are always open to suggestions as to where else we could donate.

This year the price for soup has increased and this lunch is now known as a Double Toonie Lunch. These lunches are still the best deal in town and seem to be just as popular as ever.

We are glad to see so many people interested in good food, a time to connect with old friends and a chance to make some new ones. We encourage people to come early and stay late. An old Jewish saying tells us that, “Troubles are easier to take with soup than without”.

See you in the fall!
