Effort to protect airport saves lives

It was bittersweet to see the front page photo in last week’s Creemore Echo.

Bitter, knowing that emergency services were being called into action locally and provincially to save the lives of those critically injured in last week’s severe motor vehicle accident on Highway 26, north of Stayner.

Sweet, seeing the Collingwood Regional Airport utilized as the hub for Ambulance services during transport of the accident victims to lifesaving trauma care centres.

Three Ornge air ambulance helicopters transferring patients to two fixed wing air ambulances via the Collingwood Regional Airport. The airport staff supported the crews with flight lines services and aircraft refueling. Almost half of the 12 Ornge air ambulance fleet was dispatched to the Collingwood Regional Airport this day.

This tragic event saw our community come together for others in need and utilize one of our community’s most important transportation assets, Collingwood Regional Airport. This tragic event goes to prove that the costs and efforts by our community to protect our airport from the operation weather restrictions that would have resulted from the wpd Fairview Wind Turbine Project has saved lives.

This time it was a group of visitors, in future it could be any one of us or our loved ones. I hope none of us ever needs an Air Ambulance but it is reassuring to know that we can continue to be airlifted to safety via Collingwood Regional Airport.

Kevin Elwood,

Councillor Ward 2 Clearview Township.
