Encouraging youth to take action

 In Letters, Opinion

Editor:
A few weeks ago Martin Hewitt wrote an insightful letter about the student walkouts in support of action on climate change. He was responding to someone who had lost the point of the walkouts in their (all too prevalent) binary view of life.
Last week, Rosalyn Martin wrote another insightful letter about the far from binary issue of free speech versus hate speech.
Both of these folks are of an age that has every right to be bitter about the generations ahead of them. We have, however it happened, badly distorted the grand ideas of democracy and capitalism. We should encourage their generation to stand up to correct the errors of our ways. Obviously there is a huge vested interest in preserving the existing system that makes a few people disproportionately wealthy at the expense of the rest of the people and the planet. So there is a big effort required to re-establish balance.
But if their effort makes it clear that the status quo is causing serious risk to their future, it should become clearer to their parents that they too have to take action.
So lets give unconditional support to those in the next generations who become adamant about taking back the planet and democracy from the short term interests of the few.
And let’s be thankful for media like The Echo, where they can learn to express their concerns and opinions.
