Festival fits village with a vintage twist

 In Business, Events, Visit Creemore

For a village that prides itself on doing things the old-fashioned way, it only seems natural to celebrate all things vintage.

On May 14, two complementary events aim to attract those who appreciate clothing, collectables, music and bicycles from another era.

The Creemore Vintage Festival and Creemore Springs’ Turas Mor – a vintage bike ride – both new events, are happening in and around Creemore that day, along with a special early bird Creemore Farmers’ Market.

The festival, organized by Sandra Green of Clearview Community Radio, will feature local businesses, vendors and entertainers.

Green said Creemore businesses, organizations and community members are all collaborating to produce a vintage festival only Creemore can, because behind the times is what they do best.

“I’m excited to be a part of the first annual Creemore Vintage Festival. As a community member, it is especially meaningful for me to organize an event that is focused on the great stories of our community. It’s not just an event, it’s a feeling.” said Green.

Vintage Vera and Copper Collective will be on site with a mixture of vintage clothing and household items. Entertainment includes magician Sawyer Bullock and singer/songwriter Karina Wipper performing in front of Mad and Noisy Gallery. That day, the gallery is having an opening reception for its Lyrical exhibit, inspired by music. All Creemore businesses are encouraged to get involved by offering something vintage-themed.

Visitors will also get a chance to ride a penny-farthing bike brought to the Festival by the Simcoe County Museum and a classic car show is planned.

There will also be a sidewalk sale and vendors set up on Caroline Street West.

Turas Mor, meaning Great Journey in Gaelic, is a 61-kilometre bike ride through Clearview and Mulmur townships, inspired by the vintage rides of Europe.

People are encouraged to don vintage jerseys and ride bikes made prior to 1987, with preference going to old style steel frame bikes with tube tires, but all bikes, and riders 19 and older, are welcome. There will be a prize for the best costume.

Officials say the ride may be considered challenging as the route includes steep climbs and traverses 42 kilometres of gravel roads. There will be rest stops in Dunedin, Terra Nova Public House and back at the brewery. All food and drink along the route is included in the registration price of $87.

The tour’s registration is being managed by MultiSport Canada. Start time is 10 a.m.
