Foundation selects designer for Village Green

The Creemore Community Foundation is pleased to announce the selection of PFS Studio, a leading planning, urban design, and landscape architecture firm based in Vancouver, BC, as the design firm for Creemore’s Village Green. Their global practice undertakes projects throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Over the past 30 years, the firm has received numerous awards, including more Canadian Society of Landscape Architects awards in the history of the society than any other firm in Canada. This is a testament to the firm’s commitment to exemplary planning and design, demonstrating its ability to create iconic, memorable and engaging public spaces.
Seven leading landscape architectural firms with demonstrated experience creating landmark public spaces that are socially inclusive, multi-functional and multi-season, reflective of and compatible with local heritage and culture, and sustainable ecologically-sensitive sites were invited to submit a proposal for the Creemore Village Green.
Firms were interviewed by the Village Green’s Build Team chaired by Inese Bite and consisting of Creemore community members John Gordon, Laurie Severn, Sass Dempsey, and Judi Parker, plus Foundation representative Stuart Lazier. The selection of PFS Studio was unanimously recommended to the Foundation by the Build Team.
Jennifer Nagai is the Principal in Charge on the Village Green project. Much of her work focuses on collaboration with artists and the articulation of rich conceptual ideas through precise, expressive detailing. Art and landscape have been seamlessly intertwined in her most notable projects at PFS Studio, including Grange Park, Legacy Square, and Sherbourne Common in Toronto.
The PFS team will make their first visit to Creemore on June 19 to view the site, experience the Village, and meet with representatives of key stakeholders. According to Nagai, “we anticipate working closely with the community and assembled Build Team to develop a series of ideas and options before arriving at a preferred plan.”
From PFS’ perspective, a well-used space is perhaps the most important measure of success when designing in the public realm, and to ensure a much-loved, much-used park is delivered, a relevant and innovative program that informs design will be necessary.
The Foundation will hold a public input meeting later in the summer with the date to be announced. The final design is anticipated in September, with construction planned to begin in spring 2020.
