 In Obituaries

Gowan, Gertrude Louise (Gertie) nee Montgomery passed away at home on December 11, 2020 at the age of 89. Gertie was born on December 18, 1930 in Creemore to Thomas and Gertrude Montgomery and lived in her beloved village her entire life.  Predeceased by her husband Carl and  loving mother of Susan (Fred) Prosser, Terry, Trudy (Wayne) Fraser of Walkerton, predeceased by Rick (Cathie) of Calgary, Dan (Lynn), Tammy Parker of Lefroy.  Grammy/Great Gram will be extremely missed by her 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Gertie was a community figure in a multitude of ways, including minor sports (hockey and baseball), adult skating, curling, bid euchre, Cancer Society volunteer for 50 years, Olympic Torch Bearer for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics,  Creemore’s Senior Citizen of the Year Award in 2010,  Senior of the Year Award for Clearview in 2006. She supported the schools, the local businesses, and the community at large in so many thoughtful ways through cards, food, Christmas treats, jam – the list goes on.  Gertie was the heart and soul of Creemore and beyond.

She dedicated her life to helping others celebrate their best moments and offering support during times of struggles and sadness. Family members always joked they needed to set up an appointment to see her or fit her with a tracking device.

The Anglican Church was a very large part of her daily life. Gertie was an active part of the ACW for sixty-nine years as well as being a major organizer of all church events.  She held various positions within the church council and was the recipient of the Order of the Diocese of Toronto in 2015, acknowledging her many volunteer hours to her church and community.

Gertie had a heart of pure gold that an entire community received a part of, but her family was her first passion.  She never missed a birthday, anniversary or special event of her clan and was so proud of any and all accomplishments.   Every family member will cherish her personal touch and all the love enclosed in every gesture she did for them.

She was a presence in everything.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Creemore St. Luke’s Anglican Church and the Creemore Union Cemetery. Services have taken place. Friends may visit Gertie’s online Book of Memories at www.fawcettfuneralhomes.com
