Honeywood strawberry supper has sweet history

 In Opinion

The Dominion Day – Canada Day Strawberry Supper, held at the Honeywood Arena, has been running for more than 100 years.

The annual garden party on July 1 became a tradition shortly after a permanent church was established in Lavender in 1860. It was a big social event of the year with children’s games, baseball games, by teams invited from nearby communities. Sometimes football games preceded the picnic supper.

The evening’s entertainment was provided by local young people in the form of a humourous play. Actors were given a free meal. Lighting was by gas lanterns.

Honeywood Community Strawberry Supper follows much of the same menu of salads, ham, strawberries and a choir of homemade pies and cake with ice cream.

Lavender church joined with Honeywood church in the 1960s and the Strawberry Supper continued on and will once again be held on July 1, 2017.

A lot of hard work by everyone in the community made for an enjoyable event in 1860 and has continued through to 2017

The strawberry supper is from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Honeywood Arena is located at 706114 County Rd. 21.
