Humane Society reaches surgery milestone

The Georgian Triangle Humane Society (GTHS) Hospital Team performed its 2,500th spay/neuter surgery.
The animal hospital fixes dogs and cats that are under the shelter’s care, and pets owned by financially‐limited families.
The GTHS animal hospital works with the community to make a long‐lasting impact on pet overpopulation and an overall increase in the wellness of animals in the South Georgian Bay region. In addition to tending to the medical needs of shelter animals, spay/neuter and wellness services are available at the hospital for financially‐limited pet owners or people in crisis.
Krista Scratcher is new to the community and brought her dog KC to the GTHS Animal Hospital for her spay.
“Financially, it’s going to be a big help and it’s great to have that service for us,” she said.
By having her dog spayed, Scratcher is playing her part in controlling pet overpopulation. When asked why she wanted to have her dog fixed, she laughed and vehemently said, “No babies!” She went on, explaining, “we have too many animals in the world, so it’s best that everyone does this.”
The GTHS Animal Hospital officially opened its doors in April 2019 after the existing Animal Centre was retrofitted to accommodate it. Initially, the hospital exclusively served shelter animals.
The need for accessible spay/neuter services by financially‐limited pet owners in the community quickly became apparent, so the organization began fixing owned pets one day a week in July 2020. Due to overwhelming demand, the GTHS quadrupled its service to the public by providing appointments four days a week beginning in January 2021.
“We are so proud of our team for reaching this historic milestone,” said GTHS executive director Sonya Reichel. “This was only made possible by the collaborative teamwork of staff and volunteers, and of course, our generous donors who helped turn our dream of operating our own animal hospital into a reality. We look forward to increasing our services to our community members as we continue to grow as an organization.”
