New Creemore baseball team hits the field Sunday

A new minor baseball peewee team will be playing out of Creemore this season, competing in the York Simcoe Baseball Associations Select loop.

“It’s one team right now but next year we’ll go to two teams, so it’s basically starting an organization in Creemore,” said coach Marc Dupuis.

He said the plan is to grow the organization, adding new age groups as the players get older.

The 14-player team is made up mostly of youth from Creemore and New Lowell and will travel all over the extended area for games.

“The team has been steadily dominant over the years, playing house league in South Simcoe, playing out of New Lowell. It just wasn’t really challenging for them anymore. We won the championship last year in New Lowell and I think we finished 21 in 0 but we were winning games, we were up 15-0 after three innings… so a lot of kids were getting kind of bored with it and they wanted an extra challenge.”

Dupuis said they are advancing to select level play and depending how the upcoming season goes, they may bump up to rep.

It has been almost two decades since minor baseball has been played in Creemore, he said.

This Sunday, Creemore is playing an exhibition doubleheader against the Barrie Red Sox at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at Gowan Memorial Park in Creemore.

Everyone is invited to come out to cheer on the team and visit the snack shack for refreshments.
