New gym is breaking down barriers to fitness

 In Business

A personal trainer is removing barriers to fitness in the Creemore area by opening a gym and welcoming people of all levels to meet their goals.

Taryn Yurkovich is launching a new business, Big Heart Fitness, catering to just about anyone at any stage of their fitness journey.

Yurkovich said regular exercise reduces cortisol levels to reduce stress and improve sleep, making for improved overall physical and mental health.

“Exercise is medicine and personal training is at the forefront of preventative care. Personal training is completely customized and flexible, and I strive to create a program and schedule that works for your lifestyle and budget,” she said.

She has recently relocated from Toronto to the outskirts of Creemore, with her husband and three children, and has converted the lower level of the County Road 9 property into a fitness and wellness centre. There are plans to use the almost four-acre property for outdoor exercises and riverside retreats in the summer.

Yurkovich said she has been active since she was a teen, participating in many organized sports, dance and activities, including strength training and yoga. She has kept up her own fitness while working as a certified personal trainer for the past 15 years.

“It has helped to shape my life and has supported me through tough times,” she said.

Yurkovich said after finishing a psychology degree at university, she started her career as an equity research analyst in the oil and gas industry.

It became apparent early on, she said, that her heart wasn’t in it. She wanted to combine her psychology background and her love of fitness into a career. She incorporates pilates and yoga and has also trained as a labour doula. That, and having three children of her own, has given Yurkovich a unique expertise in helping women who wish to use fitness as a way to prepare for, and help recover from childbirth.

Children are welcome to attend with their parents. There is a toy room attached to the gym where children can play.

She offers personal training for individuals and small groups, studio classes and drop-in access to her home gym. The gym is equipped with a selection of special equipment for weight training (Olympic bar, weights, dumbbells, kettlebells, etc.), an inversion table for spine decompression, squat rack, chin up bar and more.

She also offers custom fitness plans, nutrition plans, and can develop specialized fitness and yoga classes for groups, such as sports teams or school groups.

Starting in February, 60-minute studio classes for small groups are being offered for winter sport conditioning (any sport that is done on ice or snow), postpartum conditioning, and chair yoga, which modifies regular yoga poses by using a chair for balance and support.

A free consultation is available to new clients. Yurkovich tailors programs to the individual and can even bring the workout to people’s homes or office, take it outside or online.
