Organic burials are sure to become more popular

 In Opinion

Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love to read.

I have been known to sit and read a book from cover to cover in less than 24 hours. I read many different types of books. One of the most recent that set me on a quest was a book entitled Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and other Lessons from the Crematory.

I am not a ghoulish person, but I certainly do believe in ghosts and spirits.

Science supports the theory, as we are all energy, energy can be created but not destroyed.

Whatever your religious beliefs are, be happy in your own thoughts of the after life, or non-after life, that is not what this article is about. What it is about though is what becomes of our “remains” (in the physical sense) after our demise; I mean let’s face it, no-one is getting out of this alive.

After reading the book I realized that there are many options for my remains. There are the usual choices of cremation and burial, but there are also some new ones.

Reading about how different cultures choose to treat the carcass of the deceased led me to some further research.

Ms. Caitlin Doughty, who wrote the afore of said book, has gone on to become a mortician of a different sort.

One of the leading causes of death in morticians is cancer caused by all the chemicals put into our dead bodies to make us look like we are just “sleeping” in the expensive casket our family has picked out for us.

Ms. Doughty tells of organic burials, which I believe will become more popular as the generations change.

An Italian company has developed a way in which our remains can promote the growth of a tree. Our remains are put in the fetal position (how we started) and put into an organic sack.

You are then “planted” with seeds from a tree of your choice, you then, through natural decomposition, fertilize the tree, your death then supports the life of a tree.

Rather than being buried in a cement vault and having a stone erected at the head of my grave, I would rather be part of a sacred forest. That is the new way of thinking in progressive mortuary minds.

In Europe, land is a scarce commodity, with the population growing at an ever increasing rate this seems a more logical solution.

Some people might not relish the thought of being fertilizer for a tree, but really, when you are gone you don’t need your physical body any longer.

I encourage you to read this book, it truly will enlighten you on a subject you probably have not given much thought. If I have offended anyone, my apologies, that was not the quest of this article. Happy reading.
