Province consults on greenbelt expansion

 In News

The Province is proposing a potential expansion of the Greenbelt to better protect important water features in this area of the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

The Advisory Panel for the recent Co-ordinated Land Use Planning Review recommended that the province lead a process to grow Ontario’s Greenbelt to protect areas of ecological and hydrological significance where urbanization should not occur.

In the next 25 years, the Greater Golden Horseshoe’s population is forecasted to grow by approximately 50 per cent, or more than four million people. This growth will place tremendous pressure on our water resources.

Six of the seven study areas are in Dufferin and Simcoe counties: Orangeville Moraine (Wellington County, Dufferin County); Escarpment Area Moraines (Dufferin County, Simcoe County); Oro Moraine (Simcoe County); Nottawasaga River Corridor (Dufferin County, Simcoe County); Important surface water and recharge features in southeast Simcoe County; Catchment Areas and Wetlands West of Minesing (Dufferin County, Simcoe County); and Waterloo and Paris/Galt Moraine complex (Waterloo Region, Brant County, Wellington County).

Open houses are planned for:

• Barrie – January 31 at 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Southshore Community Centre at 205 Lakeshore Drive, Barrie.

• Orangeville – February 8 at 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Tony Rose Memorial Sports Centre at 6 Northmen Way, Orangeville (additional free parking is available after 6pm at Orangeville District Secondary School, at 22 Faulkner Street).

• Alliston – February 15, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.  at Alliston Memorial Arena at 49 Nelson Street West, New Tecumseth.
