Roads are for cars, not hikers

Editor:

Humans never cease to amaze and mystify me. I mean, why on earth would someone want to risk their life and the lives of others while trying to get fit and enjoy the great outdoors?

I live on a busy, winding, gravel road. It is fraught with wildlife, washboards and various other man-made and natural perils, travelling this road every day for the last 20 years has given me a prime insight as to what to and what not to expect. Now thrown into that mixed bag of dangers is the added dimension of a group of suicidal walkers. Not only do they fail to understand that the road is for cars and not hikers, but that walking two, three or even four abreast is about the stupidest thing that I have ever seen, you are putting me and you in great risk of losing our lives.

Gravel roads (this one in particular) are not wide enough to accommodate a line of walkers that is wider than a Mac truck. Bikes have a right of way on a road and motorists take care to pass or follow whatever the case may be, but hikers…. Do you not realize the danger that you put yourself and motorists in?

The area is full of beautiful trails, if you don’t want to leave town, then walk in town on the safety of the sidewalk.

You have even had the audacity to complain to the township about the dust kicked up by passing motorists?

You have also made a comment about the speed at which I personally go down the hill, surprise, I am doing the speed limit which is 80 km/h, when you are standing still gawking at me as if I am infringing on your space, I am sure that it seems as if I am going much faster. You even throw a dog not on a leash into the mix, how dare you risk a poor animal’s life. If you want to have a peaceful, dust free walk then stay off the road, it is for cars not hikers.

Cat “Andretti” Flack,

Creemore.
