Rock Hill Park, turns out I was there

 In Opinion

I was chatting with Mulmur Mayor Paul Mills this week about the Air Miles Detour contest and how the national exposure could benefit the municipality.

Mulmur is featured in one of five mini documentaries that are being promoted across Canada until the end of May. It is one of the places that could win a Meghan Trainor concert, if there is enough support from Air Miles cardholders.

Mulmur was chosen as a candidate for its music heritage thanks to Rock Hill Park, where there were many Woodstock north style en plein air concerts with the rising stars of the country music scene.

I asked the mayor if he had ever been to any of the concerts. He said he hadn’t. Apparently it was quite something, he said, there was a floating stage set up in the pond.

I suddenly had this feeling that I had been at Rock Hill Park as a very small child, and digressing a tad, I told the mayor so.

I don’t know if I have any memory of it or if it is from hearing the stories about it or if I remember seeing a photo but I was there.

After getting off the phone I immediately messaged my mother for confirmation.

It was true. As a baby, my parents had taken me to the hippie camp out where we saw many performers.

She said we camped there over a weekend and saw many stars, including Johnny Rodriguez, who no one here at The Echo office has ever heard of. According to my mother I danced up a storm to his hit song Riding My Thumb to Mexico.

Now that Mulmur is being featured in the Air Miles Detour contest for its musical heritage, I am definitely not the only one reminiscing about my days at Rock Hill Park, although I am sure many others have more vivid memories.

It is great timing because it is happening at a time when Mulmur is working on economic development, having recently launched the Better in Mulmur campaign.

It is definitely something worth celebrating. And if people register their support for Mulmur, there may be another big name coming this way.
