Seniors mark 5 years of activity

 In Sports

This week marked five years of VON’s SMART in Creemore which was celebrated with a potluck lunch after Tuesday’s class.
SMART – Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together – is a community based exercise program that accommodates all levels of ability. It all began as their Healthy Living at Home pilot program back in 2009.
Participants work through a series of exercises in mobility, strength and balance, with the aim of enabling seniors to continue living independently, reduce social isolation and hospital visits due to falls.
All exercises are done sitting or standing and at an individual’s pace and intensity.
The Creemore exercise leaders Deborah Smith and Norma Verstegen have seen big differences in the regular participants with improvements in their balance, strength and endurance.
