Silver lining to pandemic

 In Opinion

Covid -19 has become a household name and worry.
While we are all taking precautions to protect ourselves, family and friends there is a bit of a silver lining during this crisis.
The news tells us the amount of infected individuals and the unfortunate number of deaths that are associated with the pandemic daily, but there is an upside.
Planet Earth has benefited from the reduced amount of air, land and other forms of transportation. Satellite images (especially over China) have shown before and after photos, before there was a noxious yellow cloud and after just three weeks of human isolation and reduction in travel the yellow cloud was gone. Gas is at the lowest price in many years, which is great, but can’t go anywhere anyway so my car stays full. American Transport Security Administration statistics show that on this same day last year (April 8, 2019) they processed over 2 million travellers across the US, the same day this year, just 180,000. The economic fallout is yet to be fully understood, but once the stores are open and people come out of isolation, things will pick up.
The CEO has been in isolation most of his life working on the farm, as most farmers and agricultural workers are. I just noticed that he seems to be washing his hands more often. I think that maybe in nine months we may see a baby boom, or alternatively a high number of divorces. Whatever happens I hope that this pandemic will make our governments realize the importance that health care, health care workers and first responders play in our daily lives. These operations need all the funding that they can get. If this sort of health crisis plays out again (and I am sure that it will) we will all be better prepared and equipped to handle any situation that occurs.
The saying goes, “The greatest threat to mankind, is man himself.” I hope that you all keep safe and healthy.
