Siskins beat Hornets, move on to provincials

 In News, Sports

Stayner Siskins have beat out long time rivals the Alliston Hornets to win the Carruthers Division League Championships and move on to the Provincial Junior Hockey League quarter-finals.

Siskins, lead by team captain Lucas Jeffery, dethroned The Hornets 6-3 in Game 5 before a packed house on hometown ice March 15, winning the division title for the first time since 2003-2004.

It is an important victory for the Siskins, because Alliston has won every year from 2008-2017, except 2014. Last year, after finishing first in the league, the Siskins were defeated in four straight games by the Hornets, making this win extra sweet.

With what is considered the best team since the early 1990s, the Siskins are serious contenders for the provincial championship.

The Siskins will now move on to play the Mount Forest Patriots for the Schmalz Cup, beginning at home on March 22.

Also in the quarter-finals Lakefield leads Port Hope 1-0 in the east conference, Glanbrook is playing Tavistock in the south and Lakeshore leads Lambeth 1-0 in the west.
