Substitute screen time for the garden for healthy options

 In Letters, Opinion

Editor:
If you read the little paragraph at the end of my history stories each month you will see it stated that I am an avid gardener.
That is very true and whether you like it or not I am always trying to make you an avid gardener. The reasons are many. First of all, did you know that many of the fruits and vegetables you buy today have fewer vitamins and minerals than what was eaten, say, 40 years ago? Much, much fewer.
They are grown on depleted soils. The microscopic life in the soil which helps the plant produce the vitamins and minerals is destroyed by applications of chemicals and sprays.
There are other reasons as well but I urge you now to dig up a little patch in your back yard. It is still not too late to plant beans, (carrots are a bit hard to get going), lettuce, beets and a couple of tomato plants. Check the stores for dutch sets. They make good green onions. Take a few minutes from TV and the internet. You will be happy you did and will be producing healthier food.
Helen Blackburn,
Creemore.
