Systems in place to vet immigrants

Editor:

A recent letter to The Echo stated, “there are standards for toilet paper, yet none to enter the country”.

This implies that Canada has no system in place to vet potential immigrants. This is not the case.

The Immigration and Refugee Protection Act of 2001 provides detailed information on the steps a foreign national must take in order to immigrate to Canada.

Section 11.1 of the Act states, “a foreign national must, before entering Canada, apply to an officer for a visa or for any other document required by regulations.

The visa or document may be issued if, following an examination, the officer is satisfied that the foreign national is not inadmissible and meets the requirements of this Act.”

If anyone has any doubts that there is not an elaborate and detailed set of policies around immigration I would urge them to look at the Act online. At present immigration is a hot button issue and it is important that we have all the facts in order to have a meaningful debate.
