Youth voice needed at TD meeting

It’s Tony Fry. Remember me, the guy who used to run RAY’s PLACE?

The purpose of this note is to let you know that there will be a very important meeting this coming Sunday, Jan. 20 at the Station on the Green at 2 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the three possibilities for the TD land.

Some of you may not know that TD Bank on Mill Street is closed and the TD executives are prepared to donate the building and land to Creemore if they would like to use it for something. This will be the second meeting.

The first meeting was a well organized session where well over 100 folks turned out to discuss the possible uses of the site.

There was a professional firm hired to facilitate the meeting and several good ideas were suggested. That firm will be back this Sunday and present three possibilities for discussion.

So what has this got to do with you? A lot really! I was at the first meeting and there were well over 100 people there. I saw one little boy about 10 with his grandparents and I saw dozens and dozens of folks in their late 60s, 70s, and 80s. Sure, there were a few 50 year olds and fewer 40 year olds, hardly any 30s, no 20s that I saw, and no teens.

This is critical. You have the chance to say what you would like to do with that gift. Think about it please. Whatever it becomes will live on for years and years. You should be part of making that decision, and not let a group of 70- and 80-year-olds make that decision, as a lot of us most likely will not be around for the ribbon cutting. (I’m in that group – I’m 82 this coming June).

I plan to be at the meeting and will bring a 16-year-old with me. Hopefully others my age will do something similar, i.e., bring someone with them 40 or younger.

Recently, Michelle Obama said to a group of university students (who mostly did not vote in the last election), “You would not let your grandmother pick out your clothing. Why would you let them decide your future?”

Tony Fry,

Creemore.
