Soccer team goes to Italy

On April 6, the Girls Under 16 Wasaga Beach Soccer team visited the New Lowell United Church before leaving for two weeks in Rome, Italy, to participate in the Agropoli tournament. Our own Rayanne White from New Lowell will be part of this wonderful experience.

The team consists of 17 girls (12 are from Clearview) who have been training since tryouts last August and have put all they have into this team. In Italy, the “Wasaga Canadians” will play soccer, as well as head to the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and to St. Peter’s Basilica. They will also attend the Papal Mass, tour the island of Capri and visit the old castle in the city of Pompeii. They will be transported by bus to Santa Maria, and will play exhibition games days before the opening ceremony.

This is an international tournament, so this group of girls will not only be exposed to the Italian culture, but will also meet athletes from all over the world. After the tournament is over, they will head to Calabria for a few more exhibition games. The tour will go on through Easter Sunday, when the girls will participate in traditional events and a cup game.

Before they left, Rayanne’s church family said a special prayer for her and the others present that represented the team. We wished them a safe trip full of wonderful memories. They are keeping us posted on Facebook on how they are doing with the tournament.

Congratulations to the Cybergnomes who won the Calgary Regional! They are going to the 2014 World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri from Wednesday, April 23rd to Saturday, April 26! How great is that? They have done Clearview proud.

Mark Saturday, May 31 on your calendar for the annual spring metal waste collection at the New Lowell Central Public School. It starts at 8 am; then go next door to the church for a bake sale and country tea visit. Outside the church, meet up with Heidi Sterrenburg for some tips on spring gardening. Her Rural Roots Garden will have plants for sale. So there will be a little something for all the family throughout this day.

Wednesday afternoon you can join the seniors for a game of euchre at the New Lowell Legion starting at 1 pm. The weather is nicer for driving so come on out for some chatting and good fun.

Having a crossing guard at the Lamers/County Road 9 crossing has proven to be a necessity. Laura Macham, the guard, has seen many drivers who do not slow down in a school zone or who are preoccupied while driving. These are our children who need to get to school safely. The Township and School Board have made the effort for this year to have a crossing guard at this point, so slow down, folks, and help our little citizens grow up safely. Having a crossing guard here has been on a trial basis, but we know there is no case for not having a crossing guard there in future years.
That’s the news from in and around New Lowell. If you wish to contribute, contact 705-424-6497 (4 to 6 pm) or sandra@bednarek.ca.
