Gowan recognized for ‘quiet evangelism’
Many people in the village have been on the receiving end of Gertie Gowan’s unfailing support and encouragement.
She is known in Creemore and area for sending letters and cards marking loss and celebrations and also for showing up with her famous banana muffins.
Gowan was among 33 to be appointed to the 2015 Order of the Diocese of Toronto. The medallions were handed out at the Archbishop’s Levee at St. James Cathedral, Toronto, on Jan. 1.
Gowan was unable to attend the ceremony, choosing to honour a commitment to get together with family on New Year’s Day for a skate and potluck. She said she felt it was particularly important to uphold the tradition this year, having just lost a son, and wanting to be with her family.
So Bishop Peter Fenty made a special trip to Creemore Sunday to present Gowan with her award, at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, in the presence of family and friends.
“Mrs. Gowan has shown quiet evangelism, courage and faith through her work in her parish, the diocese and her community. She is community minded, faithfully providing food for the ill, bereaved or less fortunate and sending cards on all occasions to many of the people in her village – an example of true discipleship,” said officials with the Diocese of Toronto.
The Order of the Diocese of Toronto recognizes and honours members of the laity in the Diocese who have given outstanding service over a significant period of time in their volunteer ministry.
