The community is shocked and saddened by the death of Clearview Township’s culture, recreation and tourism coordinator Shane Sargant.

Sargant (left) became ill last week while on vacation and died Tuesday at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket. He was 45.

Sargant was hired by the township in 2013 and was involved in the planning of Clearview’s events. He was successful in securing several grants for the municipality and was also successful in gaining accolades for Clearview’s Small Halls Festival through provincial award programs.

Most recently, he was working to establish a Clearview sports hall of fame.

Before coming to Clearview, he worked in event planning in the Niagara Region, Wiarton and Sauble Beach.

“Hurricane Shane” was a kind and thoughtful gentle giant, a Grateful Dead fan and diehard Detroit Red Wings fan. He was a skilled hockey player, having played with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and the Sudbury Wolves.

Sargant will be missed by his wife Kristine and daughters Berlin and Brielle. A visitation will be held at Carruthers and Davidson Funeral Home in Stayner on Friday, August 5 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 6, at the Stayner Community Centre, at 1 p.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to an educational fund for his daughters are appreciated.
