Be part of paper art installation

Liz Eakins is looking for community muscle power to handle the Weight of Paper.

The local artist is looking to community members to help create elements for a paper art installation that will come together at Station on the Green in Creemore during the Purple Hills Arts and Heritage Society’s Creemore Festival of the Arts on Oct. 1 and 2.

The Weight of Paper, she said, is an art project that explores a conventional material in a contemporary installation. It examines the way we communicate and connect. It contrasts the ephemeral nature of paper with the permanent effect of what is written upon it.

“I am incredibly excited about this upcoming project. I am looking forward to the community workshops and everyone working together to build this curious installation,” said Eakins. “I am hoping people will be surprised and pleased with the end result.”

Participants will be asked to create elements using mostly thread and paper. There will be a paper cascade and sculptures and local quilters have agreed to create a paper quilt. The pieces will be made of Japanese paper, shredded documents from local business and Creemore Echo newspapers.

Workshops will be held at Station on the Green on Sunday, Sept. 18 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (paper mache) and Thursday, Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. (paper sewing). Eakins is also available for one-on-one tutorials for people who can’t make it to the workshops. Contact 705-466-2680 or eakinsbruer@sympatico.ca.
