New Lowell gearing up for Sunnidale Winterama this weekend

 In Community

Hello from New Lowell and area! I thought I would write a few words and let you know what was happening at this end of the township.

As I write this column we are finishing up the first month of 2017 and it has seemed like it went by very quickly. In New Lowell and area everyone this week is gearing up for Winterama. So, if you haven’t got your calendar marked remember that Friday night there is a delicious spaghetti supper at the Legion, sponsored by the firefighters and then over to the park for the Burning of the Green with a grand display of fireworks. This is always an inspiring night to set off Winterama.  The next morning you rise and travel to the Legion for a sweet breakfast of pancakes sponsored by the United Church and then out to watch the amazing Parade celebrating Winter and Canada 150.

After the parade, you will have many choices which are listed in the brochure but don’t forget the craft sale at the United Church and library with many local people showing their talents with crafts and the ladies will have delicious homemade pies all ready for your evening dinner.  The Winterama Dance will require tickets so talk to Winterama reps soon and get them as last year so many of us were disappointed and left it too late.  Sunday morning don’t hesitate to turn your coffee machine on just pop into the Legion for a full yummy breakfast waiting just for you. What a great way to end a fun-filled community winter weekend.

The New Lowell United Church is proud to announce the winners of their quilt raffle. The first prize was a quilt that was hand pieced by Francis Barker and hand quilted by Marie Kidd and won by Cindy Lewis. Second prize was a quilted table runner won by Kathy Parker. Third prize was a quilted table topper won by June Tivendale. The church would like to thank all who supported their efforts by purchasing tickets.

The church invites you to come to a “Shrove (Pancake) Tuesday” dinner on Feb. 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church. There will be pancakes and all the trimmings for only $7 per adult, 6-12 years, $5 and under 6 free.

New Lowell United has regular church services starting on Feb. 19 at 9:45 a.m. with Sunday School for all ages at the same time. You are welcome to come and join us for worship.

The first Tuesday (which is Feb. 7) of each month starting at 1 p.m. there is an afternoon social at the church.  The ladies meet and greet and chat and have tea and discuss and do some crafts or talk about ways to do these crafts. It is a good afternoon and they would love to have some new people come and join them.

The New Lowell Public School continues to need volunteers that would like to help in the classroom. If you have some free time that you can offer, please call the school office 705-424-0991.

The Brentwood Horticulture Society meets the last Tuesday of every month. This organization offers various ideas about gardening inside and outside along with some interesting tricks of the trade. They have guest speakers and plant sales. Come and join them on Tuesday, Feb. 28.
