Clearview culture, sports hall of fame established
Clearview Township is setting up a new Culture and Sports Hall of Fame.
“The Clearview Township Culture and Sports Hall of Fame Awards celebrate excellence in the community’s arts, culture and sports. These awards underline the importance of culture to residents, and recognize groups and individuals for their outstanding achievement and contributions to the area’s cultural and sports vitality,” reported Terry Vachon, Clearview’s new general manager of parks, culture and recreation.
Council approved the program at its Nov. 27 meeting, “To establish a method for honouring individuals or groups who have made a positive and exemplary impact on the sports and cultural community in Clearview Township and to promote citizenship, excellence and to preserve the sports and cultural accomplishments of our community.”
The idea for the hall of fame was first presented by the late Shane Sargant.
According to the guidelines, there could be up to seven inductees per year, with the ideal being two athletes, one builder, one team except in the inaugural year, two artists, one festival/event of the year, one community volunteer and two young leaders, representative of culture and sports.
Nominees elected into the Clearview Township Culture and Sports Hall of Fame will have demonstrated a number of common desirable attributes.
They will have exemplary values and personal characteristics of integrity, character, citizenship, success, leadership and community involvement. The individual, team or event has represented Clearview Township commendably by attaining exceptional results.
The selection committee will be made up of three the staff members (the general manager of parks, culture and recreation, the community, culture and tourism coordinator and recreation clerk) and the mayor and deputy mayor, but the inductees will be given final approval by council.
Vachon said the township will be calling for nominations in the New Year and that the awards will be displayed at the Stayner Arena, in the lobby that is being redesigned as part of the library construction project.
Vachon noted the program will cost $5,000.
