Municipal nomination period shortened

 In News

The municipal nomination period has been reduced to 13 weeks.

The nomination period for the 2018 municipal election has been shortened due to recent changes to the Municipal Elections Act. Nominations will not be accepted until May 1. The deadline for nominations will be 2 p.m. on July 27, reducing the nomination period from 37 weeks to 13.

Candidates must obtain 25 endorsement signatures from eligible electors, to be filed with their nomination.

Shortening the length of the nomination period gives municipalities more time to prepare ahead of the election, should they choose to use ranked ballots.

Forms and candidate information packages will be available Spring 2018.
