Honeywood Hockey moms raise money for cancer care

 In News, Sports

The 11th annual Jennifer Widbur Memorial Hockey Tournament held April 6-7 raised $65,000.

The tournament, organized by the Honeywood Hockey Moms, has raised a total of $510,000 for the Headwaters Health Care Foundation.

The tournament was founded after the death of fellow hockey mom Jennifer Widbur, who died from breast cancer in 2007.

Honeywood Hockey Moms treasurer Corrie Downey said it all began when area hockey moms decided to take to the ice themselves. They host other mom teams made up of women over 30 for a fun two-day annual tournament at the arena in Honeywood. Funds are raised through sponsorship.

She said it was very rewarding to have a tour of the new oncology unit at Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville and see their contributions at work.

The tournament has also supported The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Honeywood Minor Hockey, Hospice Dufferin and the Humbolt Hockey Team memorial fund.
