New Ganaraska Hiking Trail guide available

 In News

The Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association has launched of a new Trail Guide.

The trail begins in Port Hope and runs north to a terminus in Glen Huron before branching off into two trunks. It is more than 500 kilometres in total, with about 300 of those located within Simcoe County. The 50-kilometre Mad River section of trail goes from Angus to Glen Huron, and through the communities of New Lowell, Glencairn, Avening and Creemore.

The Ganaraska Mad River Hiking Club is very active in maintaining the local section of trail for the enjoyment of everyone.

The maps were developed with cartographer Lyle Wood, of Barrie, and the a mapping committee, and are “a far cry from what used to be just a red line on a map.”

The new Trail Guide includes a series of 33 maps plus an index, as well as trail descriptions (with latitude and longitude coordinates). They provide hikers with the option of either a printed map or a mobile device map application, called Ondago. Bothoffer hikers all the needed detail to be useable as a navigation tool in the field in whichever format they choose, to learn about and enjoy the trail from end to end. The Ganaraska Hiking Trail website also contains information on how to navigate the trail. See The Trail/

Trail Sections with Maps for the maps and descriptions, organized by club.

The new Trail Guide, with downloadable and printable maps and trail descriptions, has now been posted at www.ganaraska.hiking-trail.org.

The Ondago mobile app and the associated maps can also be downloaded for free from igloocreations.com/en/ download/ to your mobile device and then search for Ganaraska maps.

The Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association Inc. is a not for profit charitable organization. The nine member clubs of the Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association Inc. have built and maintain this recreational trail extending from Port Hope on Lake Ontario to the Bruce Trail near Collingwood, with side trails to Wasaga Beach and Midland. Each club maintains the trail system for all to enjoy.

The Mad River Club is active all year round, with hikes, snowshoeing and social activities. Membership costs $25 for the family, which helps to cover the costs associated with trail maintenance and includes liability insurance.
