Warrant issued for attempted murder

Members of the Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are currently investigating an attempted murder in Stayner.

On July 31, at approximately 11:55 p.m., Police responded to a 9-1-1 call at an address in Stayner just before midnight on July 31, where they located a person suffering from serious injuries. The initial investigation revealed that the victim was sexually assaulted and then stabbed. The victim was transported to a local hospital where she was later air- lifted to a trauma centre.

As a result of the investigation, Michael Zaakir, 31, of Wasaga Beach stands to be charged with: attempt to commit murder; aggravated sexual assault; failure to comply with release order – other than to attend court; uttering threats – cause death or bodily harm – two counts; and theft of motor vehicle.

A warrant for the accused has been issued. Anyone with information on Zaakir’s whereabouts is urged not to approach him, and call 911 immediately. He is considered dangerous.

The investigation is ongoing by members of the Huronia West OPP Crime Unit. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Huronia West OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
