Huronia West OPP laid more than 259 charges and caught five impaired drivers over the Labour Day weekend.

Over the weekend, Huronia West OPP had heightened police presence, enforcement, and patrols throughout Wasaga Beach, Clearview and Springwater.

Numerous Highway Traffic Act (HTA), Liquor Licence and Control Act (LLA) and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA) have been laid. Preliminary numbers show that on Friday, Sept. 1, police laid approximately 97 charges and on Saturday, Sept. 2, another 160 charges were laid. Some of the charges include speeding, licence plate violations, vehicle tire violations and driver’s licence offences.

Multiple vehicles were impounded and several RIDE programs conducted.

An unsanctioned car rally in Wasaga Beach involving about 500 vehicles was successfully dispersed Sept. 2 thanks to a highly coordinated effort.

A small group of vehicles were able to enter the Town of Wasaga Beach and any illegal activity was safety and quickly addressed. Klondike Road was closed temporarily to prevent a larger group of vehicles from entering town.

Wasaga Beach Mayor Brian Smith is thanking Wasaga Beach municipal law enforcement team, fire department, Simcoe County Paramedics, police and Ontario Parks wardens for swiftly and calmly dispersing the drivers.
