Coyotes Corner: Yotes spoil Apple Kings season opener

 In Sports

The Creemore Coyotes started off their season with a bang besting one of the league’s newest teams, the Thornbury Apple Kings, 8-2.

Scoring was well rounded with eight players “tickling the twine” – Ben Hughes, Ben Taylor, Jordan Taylor, Matt Salituro, Ryan Halbych, Jacob VanderZaag, Adam Logozzo and captain Kevin Boyd all notching singles, with Logozzo, Salituro and Jordan Taylor also adding two assists each. First Senior AA win in net for Orangeville’s Mason Kameka.

Coyotes continue play this weekend with their home opener in Creemore on Saturday against current league champions the Tavistock Royals.

The senior AA hockey team is going into its third season, having made it to the first round of the playoffs in Year 2. This fall, the Coyotes have joined a new league and are backed by Tribute Communities as a major corporate sponsor.

“I’m feeling very positive we’ve improved immensely, especially on the forward side,” said general manager Tom Macham. “We’ll score goals, the only question is whether we’ll be able to keep them out of our own net.”

Fans will be pleased to see the return of former Siskins Boyd, returning as captain, Hughes and JD Falconer, along with three new players: Salituro of Keswick, Halbych of Springwater, and Anthony Novielli from the GTA.

The goal is to provide high level hockey for an entertaining and affordable night out.

Macham takes the words of one of his suppliers to heart: “If I do it right, the fans will have had such a good time that when they leave the rink they won’t remember who won or lost.”

Saturday’s puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. Clip the coupon from the official hockey program sent out in the mail and get $2 off admission to any regular season game.

As always, there will be giveaways, draws, theme nights and Sparky on the T-shirt cannon. Stay after the game for live music in the booster club. Cash bar.

There are many opportunities to support the team through sponsorship and volunteerism. The team is in need of an assistant equipment manager who can travel to away games and help with the heavy lifting. To help support the team, contact Macham at creemoreseniorhockey@gmail.com or 705-435-8469.
