Valley Varmints improve record 8-3

 In Sports

Never the team to do things the easy way, once again the Varmints needed an extra frame to bring home the two points to raise their season total to 17.

It was a sloppy game from the get-go on the part of both teams with Creemore finally opening the scoring with a power play marker by newcomer Robert Flick, only to see the Winterhawks draw even with a power play goal of their own.

Saugeen jumped ahead with a questionable goal early in the third, where the puck appeared to be frozen under goalie Brendan Macham’s pad and was eventually pushed into the net after two or three stabs by Winterhawks winger Justin Donnelly, a former Grey-Bruce Highlander teammate of Macham’s.

The Coyotes tied the score late in the third on a goal by former Siskin Ben Hughes, his 12th goal in 11 games.

Five minutes of three-on-three overtime ensued, looking like a shoot-out would be needed, but with only 23 seconds left sniper JD Falconer buried his fourth goal of the year to go along with his 17 assists. An entertaining game featuring a goalie fight (actually a wrestling match) between Mason Kameka and Clayton Fritsch sending both goalies to the showers early. Enter New Lowell’s Macham, who has seen limited action this year due to the outstanding play of Kameka. Macham did the job stopping 12 of 13 that came his way in the third period and the OT frame.
