Mulmur fills void with social, recreation activities

The Township of Mulmur is launching two new free programs with the goal of building a healthier and well connected community.

The free programs have been created in response to residents’ desire for more chances to socialize and take part in recreation activities.

Roseann Knechtel, Mulmur’s deputy clerk, said public input received during the township’s strategic planning sessions indicated residents were coveting a central gathering place in order to form a greater sense of community.

“It was a common theme that we heard throughout all of our community sessions,” said Knechtel.

Because consultation is still underway and the final Strategic Plan is a ways out, Knechtel said a decision was made to proceed with utilizing the lower level of the township’s administration building to fill some gaps where possible, until a community hub is developed in the future.

“It’s because we’re here and the space is here,” said Knechtel, “and we’re here to service the community. That’s what we’re hoping to achieve, to fill that void.”

Starting next month, there will be a drop-in social with games, and a weekly tai chi class.

Coffee, Cards and Conversation will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. every other Tuesday in February, March, April, and May.

Mulmur Township will supply the coffee and tea. Participants are welcome to bring their own games and activities, along with snacks or potluck contributions.

Around the same time that the call for more recreation programming was received, a resident submitted an inquiry about tai chi.

As a result, Fung Loy Kok Institute of Taoism will be teaching tai chi every Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Drop-ins are welcome but registration is encouraged at www.mulmur.ca, or call 705-466-3341 ext 234.

“I encourage residents to reach out to the township if there is a service they’re interested in and isn’t currently being offered because we would like to grow our programming and grow our sense of community,” said Knechtel.
