NVCA, Friends of the Mad River call for tree planters

 In Community

Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) and the Friends of the Mad River are organizing a tree- planting near Creemore on Sunday, May 5.

Volunteers are needed to plant native trees and shrubs along the banks of Temperance Creek. Trees will help enhance fish and wildlife habitat, shade the stream, stabilize the banks and capture carbon.

Individuals, families and community groups are welcome. (Uneven surfaces and a steep slope make this event not recommended for small children.)

The morning will begin with an orientation and tree planting tutorial. Volunteers are advised to wear closed toed shoes or rubber boots, and bring a rain jacket, hat, work gloves, sunscreen, bug spray, snacks and extra water.

A portable toilet will be available on site.

The planting is on Concession 6 Nottawasaga, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Registration is required at nvca.on.ca/events-and-education/ volunteer-events.

Students are encouraged to take the opportunity to accumulate some of their required volunteer hours.

This event will take place rain or shine but will be rescheduled if there is extreme weather.

The NVCA is also hosting its 34th annual Arbour Day tree sale on May 11, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Tiffin Conservation Area, 8195 8th Line of Essa, Utopia. Trees and shrubs will be sold in bundles of 10 for $35 each. Selection is based on first come, first serve. Visit nvca.on.ca for more information.
