13U Cardinals Win YSBA Championship
The Creemore Cardinals will represent the York-Simcoe Baseball Association at the Ontario Championships Labour Day Weekend in Mississauga after winning the league championship last weekend.
The Cardinals were seeded Number 1 after a strong regular season and faced the Number 4 Newmarket Hawks in game one of the four-team double- knockout tournament.
Connor Greenside picked up the win and Cooper Duits closed out it on the mound. Drew Hamilton had three RBIs in the 12-0 win.
In Game 2, Creemore would play the Barrie Baycats and come out on top 5-2. Hayden Goodfellow-Oster pitched four strong innings to earn the win while Keenan Reynolds contributed to the offence scoring twice and going two for four with a triple. Nate Patterson was three for four with an RBI and a run scored.
These two wins put the Cardinals into the championship against the Richmond Hill Phoenix. The Cardinals would have to be beaten twice to be eliminated from the tournament. The Phoenix came out strong, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning after the Cardinals had scored three in the top of the first on a three-run home run by Evan Wells. Richmond Hill would take a 10-5 lead into the last inning and held off a comeback attempt by Creemore powered by a rocket three-run homer by Grayson Fisher which made the final score 10-8. The Cardinals needed to win the rematch scheduled for noon; however, rain would cause a five-hour delay before the championship game could start. Reece Fuller pitched a complete game in a 19-4 win. Thomas Weldon was three for four with a double and home run, while Dylan Rayburn scored twice and had two RBI.
For many of these players this is their third consecutive YSBA championship after winning the 11U YSBA Select and Provincial championships in 2022, the 12U YSBA ‘A’ championship in 2023 and now the 13U YSBA ‘AA’ championship.
