Dog put down after pedestrian bit

The dog that attacked a pedestrian on Mill Street early this month has been euthanized.

Mill Street resident Mark Curtis said he didn’t witness the Jan. 3 attack that happened in front of his house, but he heard it. He looked out the window to see the dog being pulled off the victim, who was walking with a friend and her dog when the attack happened, resulting in injuries to her arm and hands.

Curtis said the woman was in shock and was brought inside the house. Firefighters responded to the call and took the victim to the hospital. She is expected to require surgeries to repair the damage.

The dog, which had demonstrated a history of aggression, according to multiple pedestrians and dog-walkers, was quarantined for 10 days by order of the health unit.

A Township of Clearview law enforcement officer investigated and laid a charge of “dog running at large” under the township’s canine bylaw.

Supervisor Joseph Paddock said the township did not pursue charges under the more serious Dog Owners Liability Act because the owners made the decision to euthanize the dog.

He said the dog was known to the township but could not elaborate.
