Chamber of Commerce honours local baker

 In Business

Stacey Bowden was readying a tray of hot cross buns for the oven when she was interrupted by a surprise visit. On Saturday morning, the mayor, Clearview’s economic development officer and a representative of the Clearview Chamber of Commerce descended upon Bakery by the Bay in Stayner to present Bowden with The Women in Business award in recognition of International Women’s Day.

Bowden says she is completely shocked and incredibly humbled by the honour. “I always wanted to have an old style bakery, so in 2020 I left my secure, wonderful job as a veterinary technician and opened Bakery by the Bay. I grew up in this area and I wanted to do something nice for the community.”

Many items on the menu are from her grandmother’s recipes. “One item which was never supposed to be on the menu was cinnamon buns but we tried them one day and they were a hit. Now they are one of the things we are known for.” Bowden says the cinnamon buns have evolved quite a bit, from the original smaller size to the generous portions served today.

Bowden was chosen from among 18 businesses, nominated by local residents. Among the selection criteria were dedication to the community through volunteering, sponsorships or charity work, outstanding customer service, and a significant and positive reputation for their business. She supports a variety of community initiatives including the Stayner Duck Race and the Christmas Tree Lighting. “I love that Stayner still has an old town feel,” she says, “and I’m so glad to be a part of it.”
