Clearview Community Theatre is mounting a musical production of The Lightning Thief.

“We have a lot of teens and youth and they were very excited about doing The Lightning Thief,” said musical director Désirée Danbrook.

It was chosen by the playbill committee and director Ken Wilson.

The production includes 20 songs, 15 of which are full musical numbers performed mostly by the three lead characters and backed up by the entire cast of 29.

“The songs are very poppy, they’re a lot of fun,” said Danbrook, adding that some are dark and scary. “The youth are so talented. This show has a lot of difficult harmonies in it and they do a fantastic job.”

The role of Percy Jackson has gone to Michael Singleton, a high school student.

Danbrook said Singleton played the lobster in last year’s production of SpongeBob Square Pants and has blossomed as a singer and performer since then.

“He really exemplifies Percy. He is such a good actor,” said Danbrook adding that he is able to portray a younger boy very effectively.

The Lightning Thief is the first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series written by Rick Riordan, about a 12-year-old boy who discovers he is a demigod – the half-human, half-god son of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea.

After Percy Jackson is accused of stealing Zeus’s lightning bolt he sets out on a quest with his friends, battling monsters and uncovering the truth, in an effort to prevent a war among the gods. Along the way, he must face the mythological enemies determined to stop him.

Danbrook said the costumes really help to bring the creatures to life.

She said the show is really good for families, and there is something for audience members of all ages in this funny, action-packed show with sword fights, Medusa, a minotaur and a three- headed dog who is a DJ.

The show opens on Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the GNE Fairgrounds at 2220 Fairgrounds Rd. N., Stayner.

Additional evening shows are on Oct. 29 and 30. There are 2 p.m. matinees on Oct. 24, 25 and 31. Tickets range in price from $25 to $40.

Tickets available online at www. clearviewcommunitytheatre.ca or at A&D BirdSeed in Stayner. Call 705- 428-2465 for more info.

Audience members are encouraged to wear costumes to the Halloween show.
