Local heroes, lasting memories: United Way’s Holiday with a Hero brings holiday magic to local children
United Way Simcoe Muskoka’s sixth annual Holiday with a Hero takes place this year on Nov. 21. The United Way in partnership with local heroes, including firefighters, paramedics, police officers, and CFB Borden are proud to offer a one-of-a-kind heartwarming holiday celebration designed to break down barriers between vulnerable local children and first responders.
The day begins early, when 80 children from across Simcoe County are paired with a local hero for a fully funded shopping spree.
The only rule? The child must also buy a gift for themselves.
This will be followed by a grand procession of emergency vehicles leading to the Innisfil YMCA. There, participants enjoy a festive breakfast, face painting, and cookie decorating. Meanwhile, a dedicated team of volunteers will gift-wrap each child’s purchases, ensuring every family leaves with a personalized gift sack filled with surprises.
“Everyone involved with this event - the heroes, the volunteers, community partners - talk about the joy they experience firsthand,” says Brian Shelley, United Way Simcoe Muskoka Chief Executive and Philanthropy Officer. “I had several police officers tell me last year that it was one of the most rewarding days of their careers.”
Thanks to the generosity of local businesses and individual donors, United Way is currently only $2,000 away from fundraising all the associated costs for this year’s event.
“Every donation makes a difference and goes directly towards creating what we hope will be a truly memorable experience for these young people,” added Shelley. “We are thankful that so many in our community are supporting this event once again.”
