Fairgrounds Road is the safest it has ever been
Editor:
I watched a portion of the council meeting Monday night pertaining to the vote on speed limits. I came away disappointed and disgusted at the proceedings. Anyone visiting Clearview Township won’t have a clue what the speed limits are, some north-south roads are 80 km/hr, some are 60 km/hr, all gravel roads are 80 km/hr and the Sixth Line will now change speed limits seven times from start to finish.
I have lived on Fairgrounds Road for 50-plus years and never has the road been safer than it is today. The road is paved and resurfaced regularly, we now have a centre line, and with the snow removal and maintenance equipment that we have today, it is the safest it has ever been.
The people who are pushing for a reduction in the speed limits have little respect for the citizens who live here full time and use the roads every day. A group of concerned citizens and business people conducted a door-to-door survey which showed overwhelming support to leave the speed limit unchanged. They presented this to council along with a strong case as to why the engineer studies were flawed and that there was no justification for changing the speed limits. But certain councillors chose to ignore this. At the end of the vote pertaining to Fairgrounds Road, councillor Thom Paterson said “phew” as a result of the outcome, this was a disgustingly insulting gesture to his fellow councillors and the citizens of Clearview that opposed this motion.
