Some of the best people in government doing incredible things

 In Letters, Opinion

Editor:

Like most Canadians, my wife and I were severely impacted by the pandemic, but in our case more than most.

As a result of many factors combining in such a troubled time, problems with our taxes, benefits and CERB arose at the governmental level. As low income seniors, we were facing extreme financial concerns. We had accountants trying for months to remedy the glitches but we’re stuck between several government branches and were stonewalled.

We started hearing “it’s everywhere”, “nothing you can do” and later suggestions to “talk to the government” and “talk to your MP!”

In desperation, that’s what we did. We contacted our MP, Terry Dowdall, Simcoe-Grey.

This was something I felt was probably futile, for so many reasons, But I spoke to the staff right away, and they were incredible. In particular Jennifer Armstrong of the Alliston office. With minimum information, we saw results within days, they facilitated action between all the branches, and within weeks the problem was resolved completely. The staff and Ms. Armstrong were helpful, efficient, effective, and incredibly friendly.

Now, I’m an average Canadian. Fourth generation and proud that my grandkids are sixth! I tend to vote, but miss some, and know that people in politics are lightning-rods for criticism, anger and our frustration.

After this experience I know that some of the best people in our government are doing incredible, life-changing things for average Canadians!

Our deepest thanks to Mr. Dowdall, Ms. Armstrong and the staff there! O Canada!

Bruce and Diana Campbell,

Glencairn.
