Mulmur council fills vacancy
At the July 6 meeting, Mulmur council voted to appoint Andrew Cunningham to fill a vacant council seat.
He was one of seven people to put their names forward for consideration Andrew after the resignation Cunningham of council member Ken Cufaro.
Cunningham is a stay-at-home dad and an on-call firefighter with the Rosemont District Fire Department.
He and his wife Sarah live in the Mansfield Ridge Subdivision, where they are raising their three young children. Cunningham is a parent volunteer at their school, Primrose Elementary School.
He said he likes to share his knowledge as a firefighter with students, and the job gets him involved in community events. Cunningham is also an assistant coach for the Shelburne Minor Ball Hockey League.
He received a BA in economics from Laurentian University and worked for many years in the field of logistics.
“I conduct myself, and structure my beliefs, using an anti-oppressive framework. I strive for inclusivity and acceptance for all. I believe that, as a community, we must empower our members and allow opportunities whereby they see themselves as active agents responsible for change,” wrote Cunningham in a statement of qualification.
Cunningham will be taking the oath of office on August 3. His term will go through the fall when there will be a municipal election.
As of presstime, those who have filed to run in the Mulmur election include incumbents Janet Horner for mayor, Earl Hawkins for deputy mayor and Patricia Clark for councillor. Kim Lyon has also filed to run for councillor. The filing deadline is August 19.
