A world of sweet treats comes to Creemore

A new store in Creemore is stocking sweet and salty treats that are sure to satisfy and challenge the taste buds.

The long anticipated opening of Hello Sweets is this weekend when the doors will open to reveal a weird and wonderful selection of chocolate bars, beverages, candy, chips and other snacks.

Proprietors Kelsie and Kyle Hurley have been putting the finishing touches on the newly renovated store at 8 Caroline St. W.

“We just fell in love with the storefront, with its old school charm,” said Kelsie. The store will stock international treats such as American pop like cherry Dr. Pepper, British chocolate bars like

Curly Wurlies, and Japanese Skittles. A selection of cotton candy with unusual flavours includes frosted donut, cookies and cream and spicy jalapeño.

For the adventurous, try the spiciest gummy bear in the world, Cinnamon Toast Crunch spread, or Rap Snacks, inspired by Hip Hop legends.

The idea for the store evolved from something that started in the family. Kelsie said her sister in law started a business assembling Canadian snack boxes during her maternity leave. The boxes were being shipped all around the world to people living abroad who were looking for a little taste of home and those wanting to sample some of the unusual snack trends that are only available in Canada. That led to the opening of a store in Loretto, called Oh! So Sweet Candy. After it proved successful Kelsie said the concept evolved into a plan to open a sister store in Creemore.

They have had fun sourcing foods from different suppliers and continue to be in talks with local makers.

Kyle said of all the foods they are excited about, a line of freeze dried candy has really impressed him. Mr. C’s Freeze Dried Treats, out of Alliston, freeze dries Skittles, ice cream sandwiches and

Twinkies, for example, to completely change the texture and eating experience, making them airy and crunchy.

Kelsie said she has found that there are a lot of stay-at-home moms who are making some fun and interesting things while on their maternity leaves, which is fitting because the idea for Hello Sweets became fully baked while Kelsie was on a maternity leave herself. The Hurleys live in New Lowell with their one-year-old.

In addition to food, they plan to set up a party supply section, be an official Pokemon card outlet, and have an area showcasing local businesses that don’t have stores of their own but fit in with their brand.

The grand opening is Saturday, Oct. 1, when the first 50 people to visit will get a free item and anyone who spends $30 or more will receive a free gift. Regular hours will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
