All welcome at Legion activities

 In Opinion

Do you know about the Creemore branch of The Royal Canadian Legion?
Contrary to the belief of some, The Legion accepts membership applications from everyone, not just military personnel.
Several current members are associate members without military credentials and help with various functions carried out by the Legion’s Creemore branch.
The Legion’s kitchen is the only local large facility in Creemore that is licensed by the Ontario Health Department to prepare and serve meals for up to 170 diners. The Legion is also licensed to serve alcoholic beverages.
Arguably the sole service club in the Creemore area, The Legion underwrites several free community activities such as: The Community Christmas Dinner on Dec. 25, Canada Day celebrations and fireworks, annual children’s Public Speaking Contests, and the following weekly events:
• Mondays – Cadets, 7 p.m.; Euchre, 7:30 p.m.
• Tuesdays – Beavers and Cubs, 6:30 p.m.
• Wednesdays – Ladies’ Darts, 7:30 p.m.
• Thursdays – Euchre, 1 p.m.
• Fridays – Mixed darts, 7 p.m.
• Weekends – Both the Lounge and Hall are available for rentals. Contact Dee at 705-441-3709.
This year, the Legion will host the Creemore Farmers’ Market in its Hall on Dec. 8, 14, 21 and again in January through April of 2020, on selected dates.
Other significant dates include the Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11, beginning at 9:45 a.m. at the Cenotaph, with a service in the Legion Hall at 10:45 a.m., followed by a free lunch. All are welcome.
Poppies will be on sale from Nov. 1-11, the proceeds of which support needy veterans to meet their living and medical costs.
All services carried out by the Legion are volunteer in nature, which requires both willing members and financial support. Traditional ways and means of funding the branch include:
• Monthly Sunday breakfasts on Oct. 27, Nov. 24 and Dec. 15, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
• A 50/50 draw to be drawn Dec. 21, just in time for Christmas. Tickets are available at several village retailers and The Creemore Echo.
• Sponsorship of various functions including Canada Day events.
• Membership in the Legion bearing annual dues of $45.
To keep the foregoing community activities alive and healthy, please consider supporting The Legion, either through membership, sponsorship, participation in fund-raising events, or rental of its licensed facilities.
