Bobolinks, a welcome sight in Creemore

 In Letters, Opinion

Editor:
I have some really great news to share with our community. Creemore has Bobolinks!
Many people will know that a Bobolink is a bird that has become endangered in Canada due to the loss of breeding habitat.
Fortunately for us, I have seen two male Bobolinks during a recent walk. Specifically, as you walk east from Mary Street on Edward Street, after you pass Matt’s garage and before you reach the storage sheds, the Bobolinks are nesting in the field on the south side.
Fortunately, it is prime farm land and has already been planted so the birds, which nest on the ground, will have time to fledge their young before harvest time. We, and the Bobolinks, are indeed fortunate that this area is not the new housing development that is being built on Mary Street.
It is easy to see the birds from a distance. The male will hover high above their nest and give his unique “Plink Plink Plink” call… and keep busy chasing away any other bird that flies by. (We watched one chase away a couple of Turkey Vultures and a crow.)
Nature is wonderful! Ours to protect.
David Bruce Johnson,
Creemore.
