Doug Mills recognized for volunteer work

At the recent Annual General Meeting of RAY’S Place, Doug Mills (right) was recognized for seven years of volunteer leadership and in being Chairman of RAY’S Place. Mills was recruited by Tony Fry to join the board in 2012 and soon after, he was chairing the not-for-profit Creemore-based charity.
Under Mills’ leadership, the direction of RAY’S transitioned from rent-a-youth to establishing scholarships and bursaries and mentoring students. Over the past six years, RAY’S has successfully awarded 15 university scholarships and 25 bursaries, worth over $350,000.
“My proudest accomplishments were finding youth in the Creemore area and supporting them in continuing their education after high school. This was done through creating a selection process, securing funding for scholarships and bursaries, developing good governance and building a diversely-skilled Board,” said Mills. “All of this took time.”
He chuckled when asked what he’ll do with his new-found time now that he’s not leading RAY’S Place. Mills said, “I’ve been appointed to the executive of the Creemore Legion. The Legion’s always been great to RAY’S Place and I like the Legion’s community focus. I also have associations in Toronto, and plan to golf and garden more.”
Mills said he hopes that RAY’S and the community will continue to support local youth with academic promise and financial need, to succeed at university, college or trade school while providing mentoring to help them through their education process and career.
